Now, as a former teacher I am not saying that one should never use math worksheets; however, I do believe that many teachers are using a very superficial method of instruction that relies too much on low_level math worksheets and hands_off instructional approaches. Worksheet lessons move from reading the directions aloud, to doing sample problems as a group, to completing the worksheet independently (or at home with parents), day in and day out. Teaching needs to be more than passing out worksheets. Whether you are the classroom teacher, instructional specialist, or parent, the methods you use greatly impact the level of understanding achieved by your students.
Know what you are buying. If you can't see it (there is no sample shown), then do not buy it. There are many people out there trying to make a buck off the current popularity of worksheets. Many, if not most, of these people know nothing about mathematics, teaching, or how the brain learns. Anyone can type columns of addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc. problems; but these worksheets will be bad for your child. Don't trust what you can't see.
Here are reasons why math worksheets don't work if you want students to understand math, enjoy math, and think mathematically. Math worksheets are not engaging. Numerous research studies have found that when students are actively engaged with the content, they have a much better chance of understanding and remembering what they have learned. Unfortunately, math worksheets tend to bore most students, especially those who need the most help in math.
Integrating the above can help them really understand it when they come up in their educational endeavors. For the advanced level worksheet, some of higher questions examining their level of understanding should be included for them to practice. The students should be able to get from the worksheet the intention of the author, structure of paragraph, significance of passage and meaning of important words. Also for poems we should be able to know if the students have really understood : Making reference. Figurative language. Point of view. Text structure and interactive genre
